Pneumonectomy is surgical procedure to remove one the lungs. Pneumonectomy is a preferred form of treatment for lung cancer, when other less radical treatment does not show desired results. It is also most appropriate treatment method for removal of tumor located near the center of lung (that affects pulmonary veins or artery). This open surgery may also be performed when the patient has suffered an unrepairable chest injury leading to damaged air passage or lung's major blood vessels. Pneumonectomy is performed via thoracotomy, wherein the surgeon makes an incision on the side of the body to access the lungs.
