Nephrectomy is the surgical procedure to remove part or all of kidney. This procedure is typically performed to treat kidney cancer or kidney disease. Nephrectomy is also performed to remove a healthy kidney from a donor during kidney transplant. There are 3 types of neprhectomy procedures - Radical Nephrectomy - During this procedure, the surgeon removes entire kidney along with a fat layer around the kidney, adrenal gland, ureter and nearby lymph nodes. Partial Nephrectomy - It is also known as Nephron-sparing surgery. During this procedure, the surgeon removes only the part of kidney that is diseased. Remaining portion of the kidney and urinary system can perform normally. Simple Nephrectomy - During this type of surgery, the surgeon only the kidney.
