DescriptionA very popular procedure among those struck with baldness, hair tranplant is a procedure used to transfer hair-bearing grafts to portions of the exposed scalp that require hair.
SymptomsHair transplant is performed on men and women who want to have a full set of hair. Any person who feels that his appearance is compromised due to thinning of hair or baldness can undergo hair transplant.
Pre ProcedurePrior to the procedure, the doctor discusses the method he will choose to perform the treatment. Current popular methods are: follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) and follicular unit extraction (FUE). Just before the procedure, the surgeon first cleans the scalp. To numb the back of the head, he then injects medicine.
During ProcedureFollicular Unit Strip Surgery: Follicular Unit Strip Surgery: The surgeon removed trips of skin from the head, after which he sews the scalp closed. The next step involves the surgeon and the team of doctors to remove the scalp into hundreds or thousands of tiny grafts. This depends on the type of hair the patient has. Follicular Unit Extraction: Follicular Unit Extraction: The team of doctors shave the back of the patient's scalp and remove hair follicles, one at a time. The small dotted area is left to heal. The following next steps are the same for both procedures. After the graft preparation, the surgeon further clears and numbs the area where he will next create space (tiny holes) with a sharp medical instrument like a needle. Each graft will be then placed in one of the holes. This way, the team of doctors make sure they fill each hole.
Post ProcedureHair transplant recovery time depends from case to case. An entire average process takes a couple of hours, around 4 to 8 hours. If the patient wants thicker hair, they may opt for a repeat procedure.
