Description

Enteroscopy is the procedure to examine the small bowel or small intestine, to help diagnose diseases of the small intestines. This procedure is also used for detecting and treating issues of the digestive system. Enteroscopy is of two types - upper and lower. Upper Enteroscopy involves the insertion of the endoscope through the mouth whereas Lower Enteroscopy involves the insertion of the endoscope through the rectum. The type of Enteroscopy is decided according to the condition required to be diagnosed. While the procedure is being performed, a video is recorded or pictures are taken for reviewing later. Sometimes, tissue samples are also taken by the doctor or existing tumors are removed.

During Procedure

Enteroscopy is an outpatient procedure (procedure which does not involve a stay at the hospital), and generally takes 45 to 120 mintues. Whether the patient will be fully under sedatives or just given drugs for relaxation, is decided according to the type enetroscopy to be performed. Upper EnteroscopyInitially, the throat is made numb and then the doctor inserts an endoscope (a medical instrument featuring a light) into the patientís mouth. It is gradually eased through the oesophagus and down into the upper digestive tract and stomach. The patient may feel some pressure during this part of the procedure. Upper Enteroscopy Lower EnteroscopyOnce the patient sedated, the doctor inserts an endoscope into the rectum along with a balloon at the end. This is followed by inflation of the balloon when the endoscope reaches the desired place. In case of detection of any polyps or abnormal growths, a tissue sample may be isolated by the doctor for analysis. Lower Enteroscopy

Post Procedure

After the procedure is completed, the patient recovers in about 90 minutes. The patient may experience a sore throat after the upper enteroscopy. After the recovery period, most patients are able to go home and can eat right away. Some patients with significant medical problems or who are experiencing a difficult recovery may need to be observed in the hospital overnight after the procedure.
