Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), commonly known as electric shock therapy, is a treatment imparted to psychiatric patients to provide relief from mental illness. During ECT, a minimal electric currents are passed through the brain to medically induce brief seizure. Electroconvulsive therapy alters the brain so as to reverse the symptoms of mental disorders.
