Decortication is an open surgery to remove a fibrous layer formed around a lung, due to lung disease. This procedure of removal of layer allows the lung to reexpand. Normally there a space between lungs and inside of the chest wall, and this space is lubricated by a thin layer of fluid. When this space is violated, the distribution of fluid is altered and the lungs are encapsuled or entrapped. This causes problem with breathing. Decortication removes this encapsulation, restoring the space and allowing the lungs to function normally.
