Description

Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic surgery where excess flesh (including skin and fat) is surgically removed from the middle and lower abdomen, to tighten the abdominal wall muscles and make it more firm. This surgery restores weakened or separated muscles of the abdomen, creating an abdominal profile that is flater and firmer. Abdominoplasty is also called Tummy Tuck surgery. There are two types: Complete abdominoplasty Partial abdominoplasty Complete abdominoplasty Partial abdominoplasty

Symptoms

Abdominoplasty is indicated for women who want to get rid of loose and sagging abdominal skin that they have developed as a result of multiple pregnancies. This surgery may also be performed on those who have overhanging sagging skin as a result of significant weight loss.

Pre Procedure

Smoking should be completely stopped and patient should be taking a healthy diet. Certain blood tests will be required before the procedure. Certain medications that cause thinning of blood need to be stopped as per surgeon’s instructions. The patient should be on fasting for at least 8 hours prior to the surgery. During Procedure

The surgery is performed by a plastic surgeon under general anesthesia. Complete abdominoplasty can take up to 5 hours whereas partial abdominoplasty can take 1-2 hours. Complete Abdominoplasty: A large incision is made on the lower abdomen, above the pubic area, extending from one hipbone to the other. Another incision is made to free the navel or the belly button. Excess skin and fat are removed, and the abdominal muscles are stitched close together to tighten them. The umbilicus or the belly button is repositioned. Incisions are sutured / stapled and dressing is placed. Drain may have to be placed temporarily to remove excess fluids. Complete Abdominoplasty Partial Abdominoplasty: A smaller incision is required. Abdominal muscles are not tightened, only the excess skin and fat on the lower abdomen are removed. The belly button is not repositioned. Partial Abdominoplasty: In some cases, Abdominoplasty is performed with other surgeries like liposuction contouring, breast reduction, breast lift, or occasionally hysterectomy.

Post Procedure

Swelling and pain will last for a few weeks. Walking is recommended to avoid clot formation in the legs. Any heavy activity should be avoided for at least 6 weeks after the procedure. Scars will lighten with time and will be hidden under most clothing. Swelling and pain will last for a few weeks. Walking is recommended to avoid clot formation in the legs.
